Target Audience Research- ESPN

ESPN also has a similar target audience. The magazine reaches out to sports fanatics and anyone of  any age that is interested in the latest sports news.  Due to the fact that ESPN is a large well known name brand, marketing is somewhat easier for them. The name ESPN pops up in conversation and there is no question to what is being talked about. Their marketing strategy starts there with the name. In the case of the magazine they use celebrity players on the cover to draw the audience in and purchase the magazine. People are more likely to buy a copy of the magazine if they already have a connection to the content that will be on the inside.  In the social media area of marketing ESPN is very present, they have Facebook, Instagram and twitter accounts where they have started the #gameface campaign. In addition when a celebrity player is featured on the cover more likely than not they will shout this fact out to attract their fan base to the magazine. On twitter they also have contests to attract audiences. Finally they can advertise on their sports networks and attract subscriptions that way.
We would use similar strategies when marketing our product. For example we would also create a hashtag. In addition we might create a contest to win free tickets to a local sports game or a high school sports pass.

Interviews & Questions

While working on developing my interview questions I had to decide what I wanted to write about. Due to the time of year I decided I wanted to write about winter training. A series of intense workouts that aim to make everyone on the team faster on the water. Due to the fact that I am a rower it was hard to ask questions, because I already know the answers to most of them, but I managed to come up with some 1. By your definition what is winter training ? 2. Do you think it is a necessary part of training ? 3. If you had a choice would you choose to winter train? 4. What is your reasoning ? 5. What is the most important part of rowing? 6. What is something that most people don't know about rowing ? I conducted these interviews either before or after practice.

Revision-Cover page

According to my last post the cover page needed to be revised. This includes changing the title from Sota Sports to Soflo Sports. This makes sure that the magazine can have a larger audience and a more realistic chance of being a successful business. In addition I added a border and worked on the cover in Photoshop in order to give it depth in the title and an overall more sporty look.  Finally we changed the font of the feature article titles. In this way the magazine title would pop more.  Final Cover Page  Original Cover Page  Cover Page Template

Creative Critical Reflection Draft #1

How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? The genre of this magazine is sports. This determines the conventions that we have to either adhere to or challenge. In our case we chose to adhere to them, using a sport like font , the feature article titles present on the cover, using the same sport like font throughout the entire magazine, etc. On the cover page we used the title "SOFLO SPORTS" which fits the standards of the genre. Many sports magazines contain a  word in their title that make it clear to the consumer the topic of magazine. In addition we had our three feature articles present on the cover as we noticed was a reoccurring trait during our research into other magazines. Finally for the cover, each of us made sure to use a dominant action photo. Another trait that we spotted during our research. Finally we added a border, which is a characteristic seen only in some magazines but we decided to use in order...
