How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?
The genre of this magazine is sports. This determines the conventions that we have to either adhere to or challenge. In our case we chose to adhere to them, using a sport like font , the feature article titles present on the cover, using the same sport like font throughout the entire magazine, etc. On the cover page we used the title "SOFLO SPORTS" which fits the standards of the genre. Many sports magazines contain a word in their title that make it clear to the consumer the topic of magazine. In addition we had our three feature articles present on the cover as we noticed was a reoccurring trait during our research into other magazines. Finally for the cover, each of us made sure to use a dominant action photo. Another trait that we spotted during our research. Finally we added a border, which is a characteristic seen only in some magazines but we decided to use in order to help differentiate our magazine editions. For example I used a dark green color due to the fact that my feature article centers around a team who's team colors match that. For the table of contents we used the same font as on the cover page for our page numbers and titles of feature articles. This draws attention the feature articles and brands the page numbers which are both staples of the magazines we researched. In addition we pulled the feature articles out of the order and added corresponding pictures and a small blurb about each feature article to "feature" them to a greater extent. For the two page article we used that same font for the page numbers and the article title. In addition we added a header to further brand our pages. The header is underlined in the same color as the border on the cover in order to tie the entire magazine together and create a sense of cohesiveness. For the article itself we made sure there were four columns because that is the standard. The first page of the article also includes a dominant or intriguing photo which is standard in sports magazines. Looking at the magazine as a whole, it includes several posters which is typical of a sports magazines.
This magazine appeals to the southern population of Florida, any high school athletes in this area and any friends and family of these athletes.
